WHAT: Fundraiser wine tasting for Tacoma's new sister city, Biot
WHO: Tacoma-Biot Sister City Committee
WHEN: Sunday, September 16, 2012 -- 2:00 p.m-5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Pour at Four, 3814 N. 26th St., Tacoma, WA 98407 (253.761.8015)
On Sun., Sept. 16, at Pour at Four, a fundraiser will be held to help support Tacoma's newest sister-city relationship, established by the Tacoma City Council last April!
In early October a delegation of seven French officials, journalists, and glass artist Jean-Claude Novaro will come to Tacoma for several days. On Oct. 4, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland and Biot Mayor Jean-Pierre Dermit will sign the official papers in a ceremony at the Museum of Glass's Hot Shop.
The Sept. 16 wine tasting fundraiser will help pay for some of the expenses of their visit.
COST: $50 per person (partially tax-deductible). -- Wine, appetizers, conversation, and more about Biot, a historic jewel tucked in the hills above the Côte d'Azur between Cannes and Nice. (The European Union supports sister-city relationships, but American governments offer only moral encouragement -- hence the need for fundraisers like this one!)
BACKGROUND: For more about Biot [pronounce the "t"], see here or (en français) ici ou ici.
The practice of "twinning" cities (the French term is jumelage) is an ancient one, but it was revived after World War II to facilitate the mutual understanding of peoples and secure a lasting peace.
